Dissociation is a is a normal process that everyone has experienced. Normal dissociation includes daydreaming, “getting lost” in a good book or movie. It involves “losing touch” with awareness of one’s immediate surroundings. It can also be “zoning out” due to boredom.
If something really bad happens to you, trauma, you may use dissociation as away to cope with triggers or perceived threats. It becomes a technique your mind uses to protect you from the full impact of the upsetting experience you had. It is sometimes used by persons with borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and schizophrenia. Severe cases fall under Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).
